The Big Easy is alive with some major buzz surrounding the city’s professional sports teams. The Saints are rolling along as strong as ever in the 2009 NFL season and the Hornets are looking to take the NBA by storm with a successful 2009-10 campaign. The Saints have been rocking the Superdome all season long with an offense that is among the most potent in the NFL. A unit that couldn’t stop anybody last season had become respectable this year under the tutelage of new defensive coordinator Greg Williams. Jonathan Vilma is one of the most underrated middle linebackers in the league, and the defense as a whole seems to be playing faster and making more plays on the ball. With the way the offense moves the ball, the Saints don’t need to have the best defense in the league. An adequate defense could be enough for this team to reach the Super Bowl.

The Saints have some really good matchups coming up, but a great one will take place on Dec. 19 when they host the Dallas Cowboys. Saints fans will be eager to see if their trio of running backs can outdo the Cowboys’ talented group of ball carriers, which includes Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Football is not the only thing that sports fans in New Orleans are getting excited about. Chris Paul and the Hornets are ready to make some waves in the Western Conference this NBA season. The team made a significant trade in the offseason, sending center Tyson Chandler to Charlotte for forward/center Emeka Okafor. The Hornets got the better end of the deal from a talent standpoint, as the Bobcats appeared to be interested in cutting long-term salary.

Okafor gives the Hornets another post scorer. He’s not exactly Tim Duncan out there or anything, but he definitely gives the Hornets more interior offense than they had with the offensively limited Chandler manning the middle. Okafor is also a solid defender and will contribute on that side of the court, as well. As long as Chris Paul is on the court, basketball fans in the Big Easy will be excited and New Orleans Hornets tickets will be in demand.

The Hornets won’t have an easy go of it in the West this season, as there are a lot of teams vying for a playoff berth. A lot of the best teams got better this offseason, and several lesser clubs improved, as well. The Hornets will be playing against the best in the West all season. Fans will be herding into New Orleans Arena on Dec. 18 to see a big-time matchup when the Denver Nuggets come into town. The Nuggets reached the conference finals last year and have talented superstars like Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. If the Hornets can take them down, it will go a long way as far as the team’s confidence is concerned.

It’s a great time to be a sports fan in New Orleans, and there’s nothing like seeing your favorite team play live and in person. Drew Brees and Chris Paul are two of the best players of their respective sports and everyone in New Orleans can see them partake in some great games this December.
